Jenny Mantle wrote to me:
I am so glad I discovered your work as my year one class really enjoyed reading your poems this week.
Next week the children will write their own poems and I know they would be thrilled to send some to you if that would be all right.
Best wishes, Jenny
I like the taste of chocolate pancakes tickling on my tongue.
I like the smell of perfect flowers.
I like the feel of sand tickling my feet.
I like the sound of cats meowing.
I like the sight of me.
I like the taste of curly lollies.
I like the smell of people’s clean hair.
I like the feel of a bumpy tree trunk.
I like the sound of school children speaking.
I like to see busy people.
I like the taste of delicious fruit.
I like the smell of sweet flowers at my nose.
I like the feel of Nana and Grandad holding my hand.
I like the sound of birds cheeping nicely in my ears.
I like the sight of amazing sports cars.
I like the taste of smelly sweets and tuna sandwiches.
I like the smell of swimming pools.
I like to touch hungry hamsters.
I like the sound of sirens roaring and bunnies twitching.
I like to look at dinosaurs.
Oh thank you children. Now I'll tell you what I like:
I like the taste of sweet chocolate that melts on the tongue
I like letters from everyone but especially the young.
I like writing my poems to bring you delight
And the warmth of my bed when the day turns to night.
I like the sun on my face and the wind in my hair,
And a walk on the moors in the lovely fresh air.
I like tortoises, dogs, and giraffes at the zoo
And I really love children - especially you.
So I send all you children best wishes from me
And keep up your writing for I'm sure you'll agree,
That poetry brings both enjoyment and fun
And there's room for more poets - yes, not just this one.
